Ironweed (Vernonia gigantea)

6.50

Height 6-9 feet

Bloom Time Late July-August

This one is best to use with good root competition in a naturalistic setting as your highest herbaceous layer. Indian grass helps stand this guy up, though it is as likely to flop as other tall wildflowers. One way to prevent it from getting too tall each year is to prune the leaders at 4 feet tall, once they reach about 6 feet in height. The plant will respond with even more flowers atop a more bushy stem than before. Small pollinators and butterflies mostly use this one.
